As I leave to study for my Japanese midterm tonight, I’d like to say, think healthy, not skinny. Healthy lifestyles will get you to the weight you need to be, not the weight society expects you to be.
Keep your heads high, lovelies.

Before I dive into any other aspect of this topic, I want to put it out of your mind that there is some set indicator for healthy weight. Even NPR says BMI is bogus. BMI is an imperfect tool, and it’s not meant to rate every human on the same scale.
On top of that, I will state right now as a disclaimer and to hopefully smooth over some sensitivities: I have never had real problems with weight. I have always been generally small (not always healthy), and I did not grow up drinking soda or eating french fries and pizza. I by no means pass judgment on those who have grown up with those eating habits, but I do caution (along with many notable dieticians and nutritionists) that weight problems we experience in late teens and adulthood often stem from our eating habits as children—or more accurately, our parents’ eating habits—all of these are sensitive subjects, I know.
When I talk about weight and exercise, I talk about it from doing lots of reading, making decisions based off of what I’ve learned, and what I’ve observed when talking with others. I cannot truly understand the time and effort many out there put in to manage weight, and I’d rather push for body-positive, healthy living vs. skinny living. And, I am working hard, also. Keeping healthy isn’t awful, hate-filled monotony, but it is work. I don’t ever want to seem dismissive about that.
Now that that’s cleared up.
I’ve realized that after years of talking about it, planning on it, devising schemes around it, and finally floundering for a week just to give in to the cushy chair gods, there’s only one way for me, personally, to work out. I have to simply do it and do it in my own home at my own pace. I’m not a gym-goer (I can go, but it’s not my first choice), and while I’m a full supporter of buddy-system gym visits, I just don’t follow it. Especially when both my buddy and I are busy students—neither of us fault one another for skipping once, twice, or ten times simply because one or both of us “had work to do.” When I take classes, I listen to instructors but I often resent them when they push me. I’d rather not think angry thoughts about a dance or fitness instructor, and so, I’ve thought about other things to keep me strong.
Starting this month I run every morning to warm up, then I stretch out, and do my belly dance practicing to keep my moves strong. I have finished out week two of this plan, and next week will be the real test—taking time to work out when I’m off in the wild blue yonder that is “out of town”. And by then, I’ll have completed the bare minimum for habit forming (three weeks to build a habit). From there, I hope to continue making it a part of my lifestyle. I’ll probably eventually make the workout stretch to 45 minutes as my runs get longer and my stretches and dance moves become more complex. That’s the nature of building strength and stamina, after all! And some day, I’ll even add weights! I’m feeling better than I have in a long while, and I’ve stopped to examine it all. However, this is as much time as I’ll devote to working out in a day.
Is there a right or wrong way to work out? We’ll see. I am reserving one day out of my week to rest my muscles. I have my morning routine five days out of the week, and then I rest. Lather, rinse, repeat. My routine is not very rigorous right now as I’m simply conditioning my body to do what I want to do. Soon enough, I’ll start dividing up which muscles I focus on.
What I have learned is that any extraordinary aerobic movement—walking more places at a decent pace, running, jogging, dancing, cardio classes, martial arts, swimming—anything that gets your blood moving during the day helps burn calories and maintain health. Gas prices are going up and will continue to go up here in California, which only means that as it warms up, bike riding and walking are perfect money-saving ways to get around. And, they are active transportive methods that help keep you (and me) healthy. If you haven’t exercised in a long time, and it’s a new goal of yours, start off by walking. Ease into it and try to enjoy it—you’ll feel better, and it can help you enjoy the scenery of your neighborhood. If your neighborhood is seedy, proceed with the caution you feel is best—but otherwise, enjoy what you find in exploring. Make your experiences your own, and maybe find ways to be productive about them (delivering mail, getting groceries, going to work, etc.).

Eating Healthy
Because I’m eating generally healthy (but balanced—I love my sweets, I just keep them cut down to a few times a week, or once a day after dinner), my general caloric intake is between 12-1600 calories a day. I don’t count every meal. I know my average, and it rarely changes. I have to eat a *lot* to get above 1600, and part of how I manage this is learning a very simple, beautiful strategy to combat weight loss: eat until you are satisfied—NOT full. (Please click that link, it’s great)
There is a big difference, here. We have been taught to eat everything off our plates, to accept this over-eaten, slow and sleepy feeling as normal. And it isn’t. The feeling of satisfaction is completely different and in the beginning, it’s something you may have to check in with and attempt to ease your body into (especially if you’re used to huge meals—crash dieting and sudden proportion reduction doesn’t help anyone). Also, eating until satisfied helps reduce those with stretched stomachs back down to a more natural size.
“What if I’m hungry an hour later,” you ask? Have some fruit. Or a salad. Something light, nutritious, and good to your body. You may realize that you don’t need another meal, or dessert. After you’ve had that piece of fruit (or some other low fat snack), you may discover that you feel just fine.
Once I cross-examined my level of satisfaction vs. level of full, I realized how much less I ate, and how much less I really felt like eating. Suddenly, portion control became possible.
“What about foods that I love to eat? What if they happen to be high in fat?” Reduce how frequent and how much you eat of those foods, but you don’t have to cut them out completely. Read that link about satisfactory eating—it will help.
What kind of food constitutes a good, balanced diet? Fresh produce. Eat lean meat like poultry and seafood often, and red meat occasionally (it has its health benefits). If you are vegetarian or vegan, find ways to balance your protein intake—and it shouldn’t JUST BE SOY! Soy has plant chemicals that are similarly constructed to human estrogens, and can screw up your hormones if you have Too Much Soy. Some soy is wonderful for you, only having soy is not. Eggs daily (read up on them: essentially, their cholesterol scare is a myth and if you’re worried about salmonella, get pasteurized eggs. Eggs are amazing—they have many essential daily nutrients and the proteins in them promote healthy skin, hair, and nails. Better than taking any pill, in my opinion). Complex carbs and simple carbs—don’t balk, hear me out. Carbs are energy. Simple carbohydrates give you easy energy fast, because they break down into sugars in your system. Sugars aren’t good long-lasting energy and can turn into empty calories (and be stored as fat), and you want complex carbs, proteins, and produce to help keep you active and alert.
Sweets matter, too. Don’t eat in excess, but the happiness that a pastry or chocolate gives me is never meant to be taken away, and working out daily ensures that the days that I splurge get smoothed over.
If you have any thoughts on what I have to say, or have different input, let me know! I’m always learning, and I like to know I’m giving good, reliable information.

I love baking, but I never ever have time. Last Friday for New Years’ Eve, I brought cupcakes to my friend Max’s party. Everyone loved them, which was great—and they didn’t take me very long to make.

This cupcake is made with Duncan Hines Deluxe devil’s food batter with Ghirardelli chocolate chips thrown in, a Duncan Hines whipped frosting, and a Reese’s piece placed on the top. After having several of these cupcakes a I’d like to say that the candy on the top didn’t look that great nor did it actually add anything to the cupcake, but it was an experiment. I did some sloppy swirls for the frosting with a plastic baggy, and while I feel that I could do better, I think I just want to get some frosting tips. I know I have the potential for a steady hand for piping now (which is the point of plastic bag practice), and I think I could do a reasonable job with proper tools.
I think this cupcake succeeded by throwing the chocolate chips in and following an easy recipe with fresh ingredients. People were happy campers. When you’re strapped for time, cake mixes are not a faux-pas. That’s all I have for now. I’m gearing up for a big new year’s post, filled with New Year things.

If you’re a busy girl like me, you learn to cherish the few true moments of freedom you have with the people you care about. My advice for anyone who is reluctantly working long hours and feels burnt out is this: take that break when you need it. Spend time with your important people. Get things off your mind or talk some things out. Go out. Live life. If you don’t live life, you can’t be the best you can be at your career. (Note, living life is not the same as living in the moment or living life fast. That’s a different blog topic, though). Sometimes you need to put these things on hold while you finish a project, but the moment that project is done–take care of you.
Having moments where you reward yourself and treat yourself well are important for your health as well as your social life–without them, you’ll hit your wall faster than you ever expected. Am I speaking from personal experience? Of course I am. The above advice is something I tell myself as well as you, my friends.
In lieu of art or fashion (because neither have really happened lately–sorry folks! I have the coming week to fix that, but for now I’m focusing on schoolwork), I will show you my night out instead.
Scott and I went out on a night walk earlier this past week, and I took pictures. San Jose is interesting to walk around downtown at any time of day, but at night it’s the most interesting. I’ve been taking these same walks for years and I always enjoy myself.

Walking past Hydration, a bubble tea and coffee cafe.

San Carlos Street. Probably less interesting for you than it is for me.
We decided to stop at Icebee’s, one of the many Frozen Yogurt places dotting downtown San Jose. It was my turn to buy and share, and I love to make my froyo as decadent as possible. Scott wanted green tea, I wanted everything else.

Icebee’s has a really nice feel. Most froyo places have some kind of unique decor to them, and this one is no exception.

Outside the San Jose Repertory theater. I’ve heard rumors that it may close down, which would be quite sad. The more arts we have in our south bay city, the better.

Paseo de San Antonio. One of the nicer aspects of downtown San Jose are these wide walkways with shops.
I apologize if any of these photos are very dark. My laptop screen shows these photos in near perfect (yet night time) clarity.
If any of the photos are too dark or something, feel free to leave a comment. I’ll make sure to fix that for the future.

Last week I did other things instead of sit in front of a computer. I worked on homework (naked people post will be up shortly), went rock climbing, and had company over a lot.
I baked with my friend Anna yesterday, which resulted in cupcakes that look like this:

Not too bad, if I say so myself. I’m gaining a taste for cream cheese frosting (although I still love buttercream more). This is a nutella frosting/chocolate chip/chocolate batter cupcake, and it is *decadent*. I’m so happy with them.
For something completely meta: I found my cat hiding in my closet on one of my shoe shelves.

Classy.
Outfits from last week:
I felt really swank in my getups. I put together one for each day, but only remembered to document three. I’m starting to notice now how often I wear black leggings or black tights. I think I’m going to have to make a purchase soon at Sock Dreams.
However, that does lead me into my next point. When working with a budget, try to make many outfits using a few important accessory “staples”. I have many different photos of me in black tights or leggings, the same two or three pairs of shoes, etc. While I’d like to expand on a few items, such as my sock collection, it’s good to have items that will last a while with neutral (or almost neutral) hues.
Also, I like the versatility in certain footwear. Payless shoes is a bargain shop, but they have the occasional awesome pair of shoes that last me about a year. The suedette booties I wear below are a beautiful example of that. They’re brand new, fairly comfortable, and I hope to get good wear out of them.
The other pair I’m wearing in the below photos is a Madden Girl pair of kitten heels that still look adorable, even with all of their scuffmarks. I’ve had those shoes for, believe it or not, 4-5 years. They also go with almost every outfit I own, which is crazy useful.
I’m wearing two pairs of shoes in the three outfits below, and the same tights twice. They all produce a somewhat different effect when paired with different outfits.

Make-Up: the usual Clinique/Palladio mash-up.
Clothes: Super Low Fat, from goth swap. Express tights, a nameless tie from Singapore
Shoes: Payless booties

Make-Up: MAC lipstick, Clinique eyeshadow, MAC eyeliner, ULTA mascara
Clothes: Lip Service dress, footless tights from Target, scarf turned ascot
Shoes: Madden Girl, removable shoe clips from unknown source
Jewelry: Earrings from a set procured by Mom, basic 0g titanium tunnels

Make-Up: Clinique Eyeshadow, Victoria’s Secret eyeshadow, Hot Topic brand eyeshadow. Urban Decay lip stain with MAC Ruby Woo lipstick over it. Palladio eyeliner and mascara.
Clothes: Banana Republic top, FanPlusFriend waist cincher, Metamorphose skirt (with an In the Starlight petticoat)
Express tights
Shoes:
Jewelry: Michaels-bought cameo frankensteined onto a choker, matching earrings
Shoes: Payless booties
That’s it for me tonight. Falling asleep at your kitchen table is the exact opposite of fashionable, if I do say so myself.

Happy Tuesday! Today, I survived the last of my midterms. Also, I received a lovely package in the mail: my first set of personalized, professional business cards. Regrettably, dear Internet, I am still paranoid enough not to post my phone number on a public blog, so that is blocked out. Everything else, however, is right on the money.

Moo.com is a lovely printing service. I’ve loved these mini-cards for a while now and with the release of SweetlyCaustic.com, I felt it was high time to have a unique, professional way to share my contact information with others. They’re printed in color, matte, double-sided, with quality cardstock and easy editing options. It feels sturdy and smooth in the hand and the colors are vibrant, making the card memorable.
As the customer, you have the option to use whatever customizations you want. Either you use the Moo editor by specifying extra specs that you want, or by importing extra images. I used my modeling photos on one side and Moo’s WYSIWIG editor on the other side. As I’m just starting out, something that’s simple and elegant seems the most appropriate. Check it out if you can.
Now, you may look at this next photo and wonder, what is that blobby gelatinous thing she has on her desk?

I give you the Cocoa Loco from Psycho Donuts.
Psycho Donuts is a small chain in the general San Jose area, serving tasty donuts with strange and wonderful toppings. This particular donut is a chocolate cake donut, with chocolate frosting, cocoa puffs, icing, and powdered sugar. They have much more exotic options, as well, but this was what I wanted last night. As a side note: if I have the option to pick between chocolate vs. any other food, chocolate wins. Somehow, my thighs have not grown to epic proportions.
Needless to say, I will have to go back and try more items. That’s all for now.

Yesterday, my boy took me on a nice date downtown. I’ve lived in/around downtown San Jose three and a half years now, and I still really enjoy walking around. It’s quieter than San Francisco, but it still has a big city feel, with our local music/art festivals and events.
We went to the Tech Museum as I had never gone to the actual museum before. I saw Bodyworlds there years ago (and touched things that weren’t meant to be touched), but I was too tired to explore the rest at the time.
I really enjoyed our tour this time around. I was hoping for more things at the museum, but I guess I’m used to more grandiose creations in SF. Part of the museum was sectioned off for traveling shows, like their Genghis Khan exhibit. The rest of the museum mostly had things for children, information about medical innovation, a little bit about prosthetics and world charity, microchips and programming, and space. They had a small section for new media, with a Google Earth demo and a multitouch screen with a colorful moving art program that you manipulated.
We had dinner at Flames. The drinks were tasty, the food wasn’t bad. The real treat was the end of the date, where I remembered to pull out my camera.
I give you: Loves Cupcakes.

Loves Cupcakes is a new, small cupcakery that just opened up in downtown. I love pastries, baked goods, chocolate–these are my vices. I am a complete sucker for flowers and chocolate on Valentine’s (I’m easy, I know), and I can eat some of the richest, fatty baked goods out there. Loves Cupcakes sells regular and mini cupcakes, cupcake truffles, cupcakes on a stick, etc. We decided to try two mini cupcakes, and oh. Mine was heavenly.

Chocolate Bliss. Loves Cupcakes’ flavor section reads:
Chocolate Bliss
Belgian chocolate cake finished with Belgian bittersweet chocolate. Italian Meringue butter cream garnished with a round of ganache.
Mmm, delicious.

Scott had Red Velvet. I asked him if it was good. He says, “Yeah.” I don’t know if he’s as passionate about cupcakes as I am. But, he brought me there, which makes me a happy bee.
Weekly fashion: I’m thinking of making Sundays my fashion update. I’ll cover my outfit(s) for the week, something interesting, etc. Today is an exception with the above, because cupcakes and dates are fun.

I need to learn the art of mirror-camera. I’m not always making the prettiest facial expression, although I’m *trying really hard*.
I really love this ensemble. I want more hair accessories like black roses, bows, feather barrettes, etc. but my mini hats will do for now.
Cíao!
